#GirlBoss Spotlight: Mackenzi from Kenzi Green Design

#GirlBoss Spotlight: Mackenzi from Kenzi Green Design

I recently had the chance to work with Mackenzi from Kenzi Green Design to create a whole line of Instagram highlight covers. Her work is awesome and she does such a great job listening to client needs and paying attention to each of their unique styles. Read my interview with Mackenzie to learn more about her, her business, and why graphic design is a passion of hers.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi my name is Mackenzi Green and I am the founder of Kenzi Green Design. I am a 20 year old entrepreneur, college student, nature lover, foodie (who isn't), and a workaholic. I am from North Carolina and currently attend college in Wake Forest.

What sparked your passion for graphic design?

Growing up I always loved artsy stuff and I wanted to find a job that would combine art with today's technological advances. Ever since I took my beginner graphic design class in high school I knew I had found my passion.

What’s it like to be an entrepreneur while in college?

Being an entrepreneur in college is stressful, fun, and exciting. When I started college in 2016 I had no idea I would ever consider working for myself. I had this perception that you go to college, get a degree, and go work for a company. It wasn't until I read "The Success Principles" by Jack Canfield that my entire life changed.

Many people claim they want to work for themselves but when it comes to putting in the work, they don't do it. The truth is, if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to be ready to be different. I rarely go out to party and it's never on a week night, most of my friends don't understand why I'm always so busy, I have more in common with 30 year old business owners than people my own age, and I attend adult networking events. I am truly a 30 year old in a 20 year old's body.

What’s your daily routine like?

My daily routine is filled with class and then work from late afternoon into the evening. I always wake up an hour before class because I prefer slow mornings and even then it isn't slow enough for me to drink my coffee...which is why working a 9-5 wouldn't work for me. I usually end up preparing a cup of coffee for myself after class and my college diet consists of veggies, fruit, pasta, and little to no meat.

What are your favorite types of projects to work on?

My favorite types of projects include creating logos for eco-friendly businesses, brand consulting and building modern websites.

What are some of your favorite apps/tools to create your designs and why?

My favorite tool is Adobe Illustrator, it is my go to. I occasionally use photoshop and lightroom when I do photography.

Walk us through the process of working with a client. What can they expect from you?

When I work with a client we start by discussing their business, creating a mood board, and then I start designing. The mood board is not only fun for the client but it sets the base for the entire project. I design 2/3 concepts after doing research and we pick one concept to further refine from there.

What goals do you have for your business? What is your dream project?

My main goal right now is to have a large enough client base to go full time when I graduate in June of 2019. My dream project would probably be designing a website or logo for a really famous travel vlogger such as @travel_inhershoes (follow her, you won't regret it).

Who are your top 3 inspirations?

3 people that really inspire me are (1) Jade Darmawangsa because she is a high school drop out turned entrepreneur, (2) my parents because they taught me how to be ambitious, and (3) all the other entrepreneur spirits I run into on social media (shout out to you guys).

Favorite social media platform and why?

Instagram is my favorite because no other social media platform can compete. It is so visually pleasing and gives me a creative outlet to share not only my design work but my photography as well.

Any other fun facts/things you’d like to add!

I am always down to chat so if you guys have any questions or just want to discuss entrepreneurship feel free to send me a message ! Thanks for reading (:
